Not Too Bad, Not Too Good

April 6, 2006

Daddy (reading a story book): “And remember to give one fourth of your money to God.”
Po: You know God punishes you if you are bad.
Daddy: He does? How does He do that?
Po: In Doraemon there is a God stick and if you’re bad He beats you with the stick.
Daddy: Wow, has He ever beaten you?
Po: No.
Daddy: You’re not bad?
Po: Yes, I’m a little bad.
Daddy: What does God do if you are good?
Po: He drops lots of candy on your house instead of rain.
Daddy: Has He dropped lots of candy on your house?
Po: I’m not that good. You have to be really good.

Po: I don’t like it. I want the first story.
Daddy: But you’ve already read the first story, you haven’t read this one.
Po: But I don’t like this one.
Daddy: How do you know, you haven’t read it?
Po: I don’t like brown people.
Daddy: What does it matter what color they are?
Po: I like light colored people.
Daddy: Do you like yourself?
Po: Yes, I like myself.
Daddy: But you’re brown.

Daddy: We’re in Asia.
Po: But how can we go to Asia if were in Asia?
Daddy: Asia is a big place.
Po: Remember the time you were in a boat and I was standing on the side and you came and picked me up?
Daddy: Yes, do you know the name of the place?
Po: [silence]
Daddy: It was Kerala.
Po: Is Kerala a place?
Daddy: Yes.
Po: Is it a place like this? [pointing to a small school building]
Daddy: No, it’s a big place with lots of cities.
Po: Is it bigger than Asia?
Daddy: No, it’s a place inside Asia – it’s much smaller than Asia.
Po: Can we go there for a vacation again?
Daddy: Maybe someday, but we usually like to go places we've never been before.
